THE BEST BASKETBALL MOVIES

Believe it or not, hollywood has taken the time to recognize (and capitalize on) the plethora of hoops fans throughout America and all around the world. Whether it is in an inspirational film or a comedy, film makers have tickled the fancy of millions of people like you and me with an assortment of basketball themed movies.I have sifted through the haystack, found the needles, tossed them out, and now I will provide you with a comprehensive list of the most entertaining bball films ever to be created. I would highly suggest that you buy (or at least rent) all of the movies on the list. Then all you have to do is pop in the DVD, fluff your pillow, microwave the popcorn, cover yourself with a soft blanket, turn down the lights, sit back, and enjoy the groundbreaking experience of two supreme forms of entertainment – movies and basketball – in one neat package.

HOOSIERS (RATED PG)

Hoosiers is a stirring film about a gifted coach that fights through multiple challenges in an attempt to lead a small-town Indiana high school team to victory in the state tournament. Charging his players with a newly discovered sense of self-worth and teaching them the benefits of hard work, Coach Norman Dale eventually takes a team led by a hoops-loving alcoholic all the way to the championship game.

COACH CARTER (RATED PG 13)

What started simply as a search for a new head coach for a high school basketball team in Richmond, California, ultimately led to life-changing experiences for each and every player on the team. The new coach, Coach Ken Carter, set out to transform the habits and lifestyle of his team. Just as a sculptor molds clay into a work of art, Coach Carter implemented a game plan that would transform a team full of underperforming gangsters into a group of young men who were honorable both on and off the court. He enforced a strict policy that required respect, good grades, staying out of trouble, and most importantly, a tireless work ethic.

GLORY ROAD (RATED PG)

In a day and age where racism ruled and segregation was a common occurrence, one brave soul stepped outside the box and broke the chain of racial supremacy. Don Haskins, the coach of the Texas Western Miners, wanted nothing more than to win basketball games; he was willing to do whatever it took to reach his goal. Haskins pushed it as far as recruiting and regularly playing seven black players (all five starters were African American). This unusually athletic and cohesive team fought its way to the final game in which they beat NCAA powerhouse, Kentucky.

SPACE JAM (RATED PG)

This basketball movie is a family friendly film that can greatly impact young children. Its imagination-captivating quality and silly Looney Toon’s animations often serve as a catapult to kids growing in their desire to play the game of basketball. They “WANNA BE LIKE MIKE” after watching the movie.

SEMI-PRO (RATED R)

The year is 1976, and comedic genius Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, the owner, go-to-man, and head coach of the Flint Michigan Tropics (of the A.B.A. – American Basketball Association). The A.B.A. was about to go under, and only the four best teams from the league would be allowed to join the National Basketball Association. To avoid unemployment and maintain a sense of self-pride, Jackie Moon does everything in his power to turn the worst team in the league into one of the top four squads in one season.

"ULTIMATE JORDAN" 20th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S SET (3 DOUBLE-SIDED DVD's)

This DVD collection has captured so many of Michael Jordan’s greatest moments that it is a MUST HAVE for anyone who calls himself a fan of basketball. This set includes the Jordan films: “Come Fly With Me”, “Michael Jordan Air Time”, “Michael Jordan’s Playground”, and “His Airness”. Also on the DVDs is M.J.’s top 10: moves, clutch jumpers, assists, and dunks. They show his most memorable dunk contest dunks, and provide his top five full length NBA games. This collection really shows you why Michael Jordan is unquestionably the greatest player ever to touch a basketball.
